Lindsey Bailey and Andee Rudloff will collaborate in an effort to address social justice, creating a socially just world. By bringing groups of young people together from Nashville, Tennessee and Baltimore, Maryland, we hope to combine their talents and creativity in addressing issues of social justice and sparking change.

i could not think of a better way to mark a milestone than with an interview with andee. she has been a great inspiration and encourager in my path of finding my creative self. though we don't get to spend a great deal of time together, due to us both being crazy busy women. what little time we do i cherish - whether it is just an exchange of an email or the exchange of magazines. she is a staple in the nashville arts community and my friend. i'm so lucky!
so now here's ANDEE...

First tell us a little about your self - a little bio, also when or how did you start creating?

I am a professional artist living and working mostly in Tennessee and Kentucky. I specialize in murals and painting, but also teach, coordinate art exhibitions and events around the region and curate shows at my gallery, the Morris Alley Studio (aka "The Pie House"). I also serve as the Community Relations Manager at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Creating has always been something I do. I became an artist when creating was mostly ALL i do.


Are you a self taught artist and/or did you go to college for art?
(i think most artists all have some "self taught in them.)

I think of course exploring is in my soul, so I taught myself the uncanny ability to take risks. In art school, which like therapy, I was told to dig a little deeper into why I create and what I create. All of this reminded me that what you create needs to be truthful or project truth...otherwise, it feels empty to me.

Your full-time job is working for the Frist, what is it like to work there and also have your own art career?

exhausting sometimes. I enjoy being a part of what the Frist Center brings to Nashville and the region. I also enjoy working as an artist and curator. I love creating and I hope to also improve the professional opportunities for artists in the area.

You wear so many different creative hats, which one or do you have a favorite?

I like the crazy schedule and the varied situations. I find encouragement in each and every opportunity.


What is your favorite thing that you have created?

Wow...this is too hard, as each time I create I learn something. I am really excited about a future project Baltimore artist Lindsey Bailey and I are working on. Lindsey and I had a proposal accepted to the National Art Educators Association Conference in the Spring of 2010. Our plan is HUGE, but thankfully we both have experience in energizing community to create art, so I think we will have a lot of fun! Today, I worked a collage project today with Nashville artist Emily Harper Beard. Now I am getting ready to pick up a paint brush at 11:23p.m...the night is young.

What inspires you to create?

A few things lead me to the creative waters...
When I think of something I have not seen before.
When I have the opportunity to work with other creative people.
I have unique objects sitting around me. Everything from art by some of my favorite artists to quirky collectables and these things make me want to be creative.

What is your opinion of the nashville arts and crafts scene?

It is an exciting time to be an artist in Nashville...It is a growing cultural community...which excites me:)


Do you think there is anything lacking or see other metro areas our size having that we don't?

I wish Nashville supported its local artists and crafters a little bit more. I wonder what could happen if Nashville artists could focus on one job instead of the juggling act most creative people have to do DAILY.

Do you think there is a difference between art and craft? and if so what?

In my work I have consistently attempted to combine sign painting techniques with vernacular influences...I am combining craft and art. As a native of Kentucky I have respect for work made by hand and guided by the heart and eye. As an educated artist I understand the importance of my mind in the process. To state my approach -- the hand, the eye, the heart and the mind=TRUTH.


Do you think an artist or crafter needs a niche?

Nope...I value risk more than anything. I do see where buyers find comfort in predictability and understand that I might not ever be a BIG SELLER, as I tend to be unpredictable.

Currently, my work is on view at The Presbyterian Chuch in downtown Bowling Green, KY; Studio East in Nashville, TN; Plowhaus Artist Cooperative in the Arcade in downtown Nashville, TN; the Nashville Ballet in Nashville, TN; Magpie Etc in Nashville, TN; as well as many homes and businesses through the Kentucky and Tennessee.

Blend Studio to Host Safe Haven Family Shelter Art Exhibit

Safe Haven Family Shelter proudly announces Seeing Ourselves: Photographs of Safe Haven, will be displayed at Blend Studio. The exhibit will be displayed through October 31st, 2009. Artist talk on Saturday, October 10th from 1 pm to 3pm.


Blend Studio, a local art studio, opened its doors in June of 2009. The main focus of the gallery is to organize community-based, contemporary art exhibits and to provide a space and opportunity for artists to impact the community. "The Seeing Ourselves exhibit is a step forward to develop a dialogue about issues, dealing with homeless families," stated co-owner of Blend Studio, Ben Vitualla. "By hosting the exhibit in the Downtown area of the Arcade during the popular First Saturday Gallery Crawl, we hope that this project will gain new audiences and raise awareness about the impact of Safe Haven in homeless families' lives."


In April of 2008, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts partnered with Safe Haven Family Shelter to provide cultural enrichment through a community art program offered to its residents. Nashville-based photographer Allen Clark and the Frist Center's outreach educators led a two-week photography workshop for participants, who ranged from age three to 65 years, to learn about composition, visual storytelling and photographic techniques. On the final day of the workshop, each resident was provided with a Holga 120N camera and were invited to create and capture the compositions they had planned.


"The photographs selected for Seeing Ourselves represent life patterns and happenings that are experienced by people living in a variety of circumstances,' said Andee Rudloff, community relations manager at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and curator of the exhibition. "Instead of simply documenting the conditions of homelessness, the images remind us that we all share common hopes dreams and goals."

Our guest artist this year is Donna McElroy, master jazz vocalist, educator, and recording artist on the faculty of Berklee College of Music. New position at the Frist Center

After almost 2 years, I will no longer be serving as the Educator for Outreach in Education at the Frist Center...but instead will take on the task of Community Relations Manger in Communications. To someone outside the Frist Center, this may not seem like a serious change, but to anyone inside the Frist Center...you all know...BIG change, but I will still be working with communities in and around Nashville.

NASHVILLE, TENN. [June 29, 2009] - Gallery 121 in The Leu Center for the Visual Arts at
Belmont University presents Indigenous Connections: Life in San Bernardo, Ecuador featuring
the work of Nashville's own fine art and human interest photographer Stacey Irvin. Indigenous
Connections will be on exhibit weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. July 1st through July 31st, 2009.
The Tennessee Arts Academy will host a public reception to honor the artist on Tuesday, July 14th,
2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

This exhibition is guest curated by Andee Rudloff.


In the Spring of 2008 Irvin traveled to the indigenous village of San Bernardo, Ecuador in order to
get to know a close-knit community of hard-working subsistence farmers. Life is difficult and
homes, livestock and crops literally cling to the steep green slopes of the surrounding mountains.
In spite of many hardships, Irvin is inspired by the joyful spirit of this community - a spirit that is fed
by a deep devotion to family, community, faith and an intimate connection to the land.
Stacey Irvin, a graduate of Vanderbilt University, will give a slide presentation in The Leu Center
for the Visual Arts, Room 119 on Tuesday, July 14th at 2:25 p.m. The artist's talk and gallery
reception on July 14th are presented in conjunction with The Tennessee Arts Academy.

11th Annual Renaissance Regional Art Exhibit

The Renaissance Center is excited to announce the 11th Annual Renaissance Regional Art Exhibition and 3rd Annual Graduate Exhibition on display in the Visual Art Gallery, East Wing Gallery, North Wing Gallery from August 21st through October 24th, 2009.
The Visual Arts Gallery and East Wing present the work of artists residing in the Southeast. Andee Rudloff, local artist and Community Relations Manager at the Frist Center served as juror for this annual competition choosing about 50 quality pieces out of 158 entries. Media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and more represents such states as Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky and Lousiana.
The North Wing will feature the 3rd Annual Graduate Exhibition, a contemporary installation by artist Ben Utigard. A recent MFA graduate from Memphis College of Art, Utigard paints and creates collages and then cuts out pieces from the finished canvas using a band saw. These pieces form Utigard's Cut-Out Painting Series and installation that functions as an explosion of art on the walls.
A free open reception will take place from 6pm-7:30pm on August 21st, 2009.
The Renaissance Center is an arts, technology education and performing arts center just 35 miles west of Nashville.

TINNEY CONTEMPORARY JULY 18, 2009

NASHVILLE, TENN.-Tinney Contemporary opens the gallery to guest curator Andee Rudloff who presents My Magic Cape featuring Nashville's BEST art "instigators" Don Evans, Myles Maillie, Brandon Donahue, Keith Harmon and Ellen Stevens. My Magic Cape opens Saturday, July 18th, 2009, with a reception honoring the artists. The exhibition will feature a variety of works by five artists rarely seen in a formal gallery setting, "My Magic Cape, is an exhibition of SUPREME local talent revealing exchanges between contemporary art, popular culture, civil unrest and moral upheaval," says curator Andee Rudloff.

Rudloff adds, "Nashville-based artists are making the national scene and have always been a part of the national scene. The five artists in My Magic Cape are coming together for one show to share a little about themselves and a lot about why they have, and will always, do something and encourage others to do something."

The gallery will feature images and text about each artist and numerous works including but not limited to drawings, paintings, mixed media works, installation, film and sculpture.

About Women & Kids Learning Together Summer Camp
Warren County and neighboring counties are in need of projects and efforts that serve low-income women and their children. Women & Kids Learning Together Summer Camp is the only such project in Kentucky. Overall, Kentucky ranks as the 3rd worst state for women, according to a 2004 report by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. The 2002 Governor's Task Force on the Economic Status of Kentucky's Women also found that Kentucky ranks 47th in measures of women's economic and social autonomy, ranks 49th in the percentage of women with four or more years of college, and ranks 50th in health and well-being of its women. It is evident from these numbers that women in this area need assistance and encouragement.

WKLT focuses on education, the arts, and physical and emotional wellness, in order to help improve the lives of low-income and under-educated women in the area. Through classes, workshops, and teambuilding activities, these women will be better prepared for long-term education and employment. They will participate in activities that allow them to explore self-expression and engage in new experiences.

The kids, too portion of the program will encourage the participants' children to be creative and to express themselves in positive and healthy ways. The children will participate in art, drama, dance, and creative writing activities led by Western students. This aspect of the program supports WKU's efforts to encourage active student learning and community engagement.

Love Birds is a two person exhibition of paintings by engaged couple, Chuck Beard of Bowling Green, KY & Emily Harper of Nashville, TN. They will show watercolor, oil, batik, & collaborative pieces. The couple plan on marrying in September of this year.

Author Chuck Beard celebrates the release of his first novel at Memphis Marsha's with a combination book signing and art show Friday, June 5, 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with the downtown Bowling Green Gallery Hop. Beard, who has written for several
publications including Number Inc. and Nashville Arts Magazine, wrote Adventures Inside a Bright-Eyed Sky while studying creative writing at the University of Edinburgh. Artwork for the book's cover was created by Bowling Green artist and Love
Birds curator, Andee Rudloff. Rudloff introduced Beard and Harper when she assembled her team of artists to work on an installation for the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens in 2008. All proceeds from the book sales will benefit the non-profit
organization founded by Beard, Adventures Inside a Campus for a Cure, an organization devoted to research and finding a cure for cancer.

Harper is an emerging artist and co-owner of magpie etc., in Nashville, Tenn. With a number successful shows under her belt, including the Martin Center Frist Gallery of the Nashville Ballet, she attributes much of her artistic inspiration to her talented mother and co-collaborators.

The exhibition continues at Memphis Marsha's on regular gallery days, Thursdays-Saturdays, 10-4 CT, or by appointment for other days & times. The exhibition & reception are free, & open to the public.

The NAEA National Convention is an annual conference providing substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. Fundred at the FRIST

Join the Frist Center's outreach educators in contributing to artist Mel Chin's FUNDRED project.

The FUNDRED DOLLAR BILL PROJECT is an innovative artwork made of millions of drawings. This creative collective action is intended to support OPERATION PAYDIRT, an extraordinary art/science project uniting three million children with educators, scientists, health care professionals, designers, urban planners, engineers and artists. Together they are working to make lead-polluted soil in New Orleans safe. The toxic soil currently places thousands of children at risk for severe learning disabilities and behavioral problems, including violent crime.

The FUNDRED DOLLAR BILL PROJECT is raising local and national awareness of the hidden problems of lead pollution in New Orleans through the production of "FUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS"--original, hand drawn interpretations of U.S. one hundred dollar bills created by school children and community members across the United States.

The Downtown Presbyterian Church hosts a spring art show during the church season of Lent called The D.I.G.Through Art Show (Dialogue:an Interaction for Growth). The D.I.G.show began in 1998 as an extension of the artists-in-residency program and has explored a different theme each year during lent. Previous themes have included "Icons and Idols","Incarnation
and Risk","Human Sacrifice" and others.

Lent is the church season of 40 days (not including feast days) before Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb.25th and ends on Easter Sunday, April 12th. It is symbolic of both the 40 years of Israel's wandering in the desert and the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and being tempted in the wild. The church feels this is an appropriate season to invite artists from our community to join us in wrestling with the challenges of our faith.

This year's theme is "Embodiment." Alongside the art show, the church will be hosting a film series on the same theme with a light meal provided before and opportunities for discussion after each film.

The grand opening reception and presentation of the purchase award will be on Saturday, March 7th 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM and will coincide with the 1st Saturday Gallery Crawl and the church's monthly Art-Luck Potluck dinner and art reception.

Adventures Inside A Bright-Eyed Sky is a not so tall tale about a boy named Jay, told by Jay. A young boy that is having trouble finding the reasons why his childhood seems to be departing just as soon as he is getting to the heart of it all.

In the search of truth behind every day everyday mysteries at the same time crossing paths with various characters into his life with lessons not really pertaining to the current thought of the moment, Jay discovers just how adversity, friendship, and death all happen for a reason … Jay discovers himself.

Jay’s older Scottish friend Kat once told him, ‘‘Life is what happens to most people when others are busy making plans.” But Jay didn’t ever plan on having a younger brother, he didn’t plan on the death of a best friend, and he didn’t plan on having to find all the answers that he’d ever questioned about life before his 13th birthday.

Sometimes, you have to step on the bus and find out for yourself. Sometimes, life just happens. Sometimes, sometimes, just may be right now.

Seeing Ourselves: Photographs of Safe Haven

Andee's first curatorial effort at the Frist Center!!!

In April 2008, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts partnered with Safe Haven Family Shelter to provide an opportunity for cultural enrichment through a community art program offered to its residents. Local photographer Allen Clark and the Frist Center's outreach educators led participants, who ranged in age from three to sixty-five years, in a two-week photography workshop, during which they learned about composition, visual storytelling, and photographic technique. Writing exercises and preliminary drawings helped residents form ideas for images that reflected their thoughts about their lives. On the final day of the workshop, each resident was provided with a Holga 120N camera and invited to capture the compositions they had planned.

Safe Haven is the only shelter in middle Tennessee that provides both interim housing and job training, thereby empowering homeless families with children to live independently. The photographs selected for Seeing Ourselves represent life patterns and happenings that are experienced by people living in a variety of circumstances. Instead of simply documenting the conditions of homelessness, the images remind us that we all share common hopes, dreams, and goals.

The Holga 120N is a medium format, toy-like camera. Holga enthusiasts believe that flaws in the camera's plastic lens and body mechanics give pictures an appealing look. Light leaks, vignetting, loss of sharpness, and other "imperfections" produce unique effects to create works that transcend straightforward documentation. In the world of photography, Holga images are in many ways the visual equivalent to what vinyl records are to the music industry.

The Connect 12 Artist Collective is pleased to present their exhibition at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, from November 1 through November 30. An opening reception for the group will be held on Saturday, November 1, from 6 - 9 p.m., in conjunction with the First Saturday Art Crawl. In addition, the group will hold two informal artist talks at the Church, at 1 p.m. on Saturday November 8 and on November 15.

Ben Vitualla brought his peers together for the first Connect 12 show last September at Dangenart Gallery. The inaugural show not only brought critical acclaim for the collective of Nashville-based artists, but also served to inspire them each to produce exploratory works of art. The simple philosophy of the group is to promote individual growth through exploration of craft and content.

As diverse as the artists, so are their crafts, methods and statements. Viewers should expect the variety of media at this fall's show to include interactive performances, fiber arts, photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting and mixed media. Content will range from reflections on the current political instabilities to explorations of the whimsy of coloring books.

Exhibiting artists include Alesandra Bellos, Jimi Benedict, Rick Bradley, Samantha Callahan, Eric Denton, Tiffany Denton, Chris Hill, Stacey Irvin, Sean Jewett, Erika Johnson, Shana Kohnstamm, Daniel Lai, Andee Rudloff and Ben Vitualla.

The Three Pigs opens May 24

Cheekwood unveils its summer exhibition for 2008 on Saturday, May 24th.

A family-friendly affair, Happily Ever After features eight interactive outdoor installations inspired by classic children's tales such as Three Billy Goats Gruff and Rumpelstiltskin. All were created by teams of local artists and designers, who bring their own sensibilities to each scenario.

For instance, Andee Rudloff, Don Evans and six other artists pay tribute to the Three Little Pigs by offering visitors a wolf's-eye view of the porcine protagonists. Happily Ever After remains on view at Cheekwood, 1200 Forrest Park Drive, through Sept. 7. Andee Rudloff, one of the Frist's most popular speakers, will talk about the center and the upcoming "Tiffany by Design" exhibit. Andee Rudloff, Frist Center's Educator for Outreach, has spent more than 18 years as a professional artist, curator and educator. Prior to the Frist Center she served as Curator for the Johnny Cash Collection for Curb Records, Curator for Arts at the Nashville International Airport, and worked closely with John Warren Oakes and Western Kentucky University on the national touring "At Home On Tour Exhibition With Judy Chicago." Happily Ever After...The Three Pigs
May 24 - September 7, 2008

Remember your favorite classic fairy tale? So many of our most beloved tales take place in the meadows, near the ponds, under big trees, in castles, and homes in the wood... places just like the gardens at Cheekwood! A mixture of fairy tales, the installation will consist of artfully designed storybook settings, nestled in Cheekwood's natural landscape.

Stories include: Rumpelstiltskin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Sword and the Stone, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Riding Hood, Princess and the Pea, Three Little Pigs, and Rapunzel.

TEAM-3 Pigs, led by Andee Rudloff, includes a mixture of artists from Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee. The team of Donnie Firkins, Chuck Beard, Don Evans, Emily Harper, Mark Sloniker, Kyle Alexander and Stacey Irvin will create an interactive version of the story of The Three Pigs. A must see!!!
