The D.I.G.Through Art Show

The D.I.G.Through Art Show
Dialogue: an Interaction for Growth
Exhibition photo by Sarah Shearer

The Downtown Presbyterian Church hosts a spring art show during the church season of Lent called The D.I.G.Through Art Show (Dialogue:an Interaction for Growth). The D.I.G.show began in 1998 as an extension of the artists-in-residency program and has explored a different theme each year during lent. Previous themes have included "Icons and Idols","Incarnation
and Risk","Human Sacrifice" and others.

Lent is the church season of 40 days (not including feast days) before Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb.25th and ends on Easter Sunday, April 12th. It is symbolic of both the 40 years of Israel's wandering in the desert and the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and being tempted in the wild. The church feels this is an appropriate season to invite artists from our community to join us in wrestling with the challenges of our faith.

This year's theme is "Embodiment." Alongside the art show, the church will be hosting a film series on the same theme with a light meal provided before and opportunities for discussion after each film.

The grand opening reception and presentation of the purchase award will be on Saturday, March 7th 2009 from 6:00-9:00 PM and will coincide with the 1st Saturday Gallery Crawl and the church's monthly Art-Luck Potluck dinner and art reception.

Thanks from the resident artists of The Downtown Presbyterian Church: Beth Gilmore, Richard Feaster, Jodi Hays, Sarah Shearer, Elizabeth Streight, Tasha French & Tom Wills.

For more info contact : Beth Gilmore beth.gilmore@gmail.com

Hot off the press...

THE book by author Chuck Beard with cover art by Andee is OUT! Get your hardback, hot off the press, copy TODAY at: http://campusforacure.org/merch

Adventures Inside A Bright-Eyed Sky is a not so tall tale about a boy named Jay, told by Jay. A young boy that is having trouble finding the reasons why his childhood seems to be departing just as soon as he is getting to the heart of it all.

In the search of truth behind every day everyday mysteries at the same time crossing paths with various characters into his life with lessons not really pertaining to the current thought of the moment, Jay discovers just how adversity, friendship, and death all happen for a reason … Jay discovers himself.

Jay’s older Scottish friend Kat once told him, ‘‘Life is what happens to most people when others are busy making plans.” But Jay didn’t ever plan on having a younger brother, he didn’t plan on the death of a best friend, and he didn’t plan on having to find all the answers that he’d ever questioned about life before his 13th birthday.

Sometimes, you have to step on the bus and find out for yourself. Sometimes, life just happens. Sometimes, sometimes, just may be right now.

Seeing Ourselves: Photographs of Safe Haven

Andee's first curatorial effort at the Frist Center!!!

In April 2008, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts partnered with Safe Haven Family Shelter to provide an opportunity for cultural enrichment through a community art program offered to its residents. Local photographer Allen Clark and the Frist Center's outreach educators led participants, who ranged in age from three to sixty-five years, in a two-week photography workshop, during which they learned about composition, visual storytelling, and photographic technique. Writing exercises and preliminary drawings helped residents form ideas for images that reflected their thoughts about their lives. On the final day of the workshop, each resident was provided with a Holga 120N camera and invited to capture the compositions they had planned.

Safe Haven is the only shelter in middle Tennessee that provides both interim housing and job training, thereby empowering homeless families with children to live independently. The photographs selected for Seeing Ourselves represent life patterns and happenings that are experienced by people living in a variety of circumstances. Instead of simply documenting the conditions of homelessness, the images remind us that we all share common hopes, dreams, and goals.

The Holga 120N is a medium format, toy-like camera. Holga enthusiasts believe that flaws in the camera's plastic lens and body mechanics give pictures an appealing look. Light leaks, vignetting, loss of sharpness, and other "imperfections" produce unique effects to create works that transcend straightforward documentation. In the world of photography, Holga images are in many ways the visual equivalent to what vinyl records are to the music industry.

Nashville Scene's "Best of..." FREE T-shirts AVAILABLE

The Nashville Scene's "Best of Nashville"
Best Art Community Energizer
Andee Rudloff
Andee FREE* T-shirts AVAILABLE (size Large ONLY)
T-shirt Image by Karen Edgin

Possibly one of the busiest artists in town, Andee Rudloff is more common at the city's art functions than Merlot. Even while working as educator for outreach at the Frist Center and regularly collaborating with artists in Nashville and Bowling Green, Ky., she not only manages to attend all the local openings but also seems inexhaustibly available for questions, thoughts and inspiration. Rudloff's attitude is as energizing for her peers as the dynamic hues in her colorful paintings. Now if she'll just take a breath. -AMANDA DILLINGHAM

*-The t-shirt is free, but shipping is $3.50 per t-shirt.

Andee-Nashville Scene's "Best of"...

Possibly one of the busiest artists in town, Andee Rudloff is more common at the city's art functions than Merlot. Even while working as educator for outreach at the Frist Center and regularly collaborating with artists in Nashville and Paducah, Ky., she not only manages to attend all the local openings but also seems inexhaustibly available for questions, thoughts and inspiration. Rudloff's attitude is as energizing for her peers as the dynamic hues in her colorful paintings. Now if she'll just take a breath. -AMANDA DILLINGHAM

Comment by Nancy VanReece from Nashville:
Andee warms all who know her like a good glass of merlot as well. Her Kentucky time is spent in Bowling Green rather than Paducah but those of us who know her best know that her heart is in Nashville. (wink wink)

Comment by kim.chalmers from Bowling Green, KY:
I couldn't agree more! Your selection of Andee Rudloff as Best Art Community Energizer is right on the mark. Andee works tirelessly and enthusiastically across a broad spectrum to keep all artists informed of art activities and opportunities from Bowling Green, KY to Nashville, TN. She is generous and supportive of emerging and established artists as well as exhibition venues, community enrichment organizations and educational institutions forming a network of support and encouragement that fosters open dialogue, cultural engagement and creative extension and awareness at all levels. Hers is a natural giving that is driven by boundless enthusiasm for the complex joys of art and humanity. Congratulations Andee!

Connect 12 at Downtown Presbyterian Church-Nashville, TN

Connect 12 Artist Collective
At the Downtown Presbyterian Church
(show image created by Eric Denton)

The Connect 12 Artist Collective is pleased to present their exhibition at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, from November 1 through November 30. An opening reception for the group will be held on Saturday, November 1, from 6 - 9 p.m., in conjunction with the First Saturday Art Crawl. In addition, the group will hold two informal artist talks at the Church, at 1 p.m. on Saturday November 8 and on November 15.

Ben Vitualla brought his peers together for the first Connect 12 show last September at Dangenart Gallery. The inaugural show not only brought critical acclaim for the collective of Nashville-based artists, but also served to inspire them each to produce exploratory works of art. The simple philosophy of the group is to promote individual growth through exploration of craft and content.

As diverse as the artists, so are their crafts, methods and statements. Viewers should expect the variety of media at this fall's show to include interactive performances, fiber arts, photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting and mixed media. Content will range from reflections on the current political instabilities to explorations of the whimsy of coloring books.

Exhibiting artists include Alesandra Bellos, Jimi Benedict, Rick Bradley, Samantha Callahan, Eric Denton, Tiffany Denton, Chris Hill, Stacey Irvin, Sean Jewett, Erika Johnson, Shana Kohnstamm, Daniel Lai, Andee Rudloff and Ben Vitualla.

The Downtown Presbyterian Church is located at 254 5th Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37219. You may wish to call ahead for additional viewing hours at 615-254-7584 or visit the web site at http://www.dpchurch.com.

Additional high-resolution press images are available upon request.

The Three Pigs opens May 24

Cheekwood unveils its summer exhibition for 2008 on Saturday, May 24th.

A family-friendly affair, Happily Ever After features eight interactive outdoor installations inspired by classic children's tales such as Three Billy Goats Gruff and Rumpelstiltskin. All were created by teams of local artists and designers, who bring their own sensibilities to each scenario.

For instance, Andee Rudloff, Don Evans and six other artists pay tribute to the Three Little Pigs by offering visitors a wolf's-eye view of the porcine protagonists. Happily Ever After remains on view at Cheekwood, 1200 Forrest Park Drive, through Sept. 7. For hours and information on gate fees (which include free admission for children on Saturdays, starting May 31), visit www.cheekwood.org or call 356-8000.

The Birdhouse Thing for WO Smith

Thanks to my friend and W.O. Smith alumni Kirstin Anderson, I have painted a birdhouse to raise needed funds for W.O. Smith Music School. My birdhouse is titled "Homage to Dine."

Smith Music School, The Birdhouse Thing showcases 150 artfully designed birdhouses available for purchase through both live and silent auction at the event or online at opryauction.com. Artist Joseph D. Downing, 82, dies

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

Artist Joseph D. Downing, 82, dies
Museum of his work set for Bowling Green
By Paula Burba
pburba@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

Joseph Dudley Downing, a Kentucky native who became an expatriate artist in France -- never returning for more than brief visits -- has died at the age of 82.

Downing died Saturday in Menerbes, a village in the Provence region of France where he'd lived more than half a century. He also maintained an apartment and studio in Paris.

The cause of his death was not immediately available yesterday, although it was believed to be natural causes, according to friends and the funeral home handling arrangements.

"He's one of Kentucky's major lights in contemporary arts," Owensboro Museum of Fine Art director Mary Bryan Hood said yesterday. "In time, he will be recognized as a major influence in European art, but also certainly a major American artist."

She had talked to Downing in recent weeks as he planned to return to the United States for the spring opening of the Joseph Dudley Downing Museum in Bowling Green.

"I'm still in a state of shock," said Bowling Green businessman Jerry Baker, a collector who has organized and built the museum to exclusively house his collection of about 1,000 of Downing's works.

Yesterday Baker received a letter from Downing about his art, as well as information about a new book he had written.

"I do know we need to go on with the opening," Baker said. "I guess it will be more of a dedication than an opening. … And a memorial to his life."

The Owensboro museum commissioned Downing to do the principal works for its 1993 expansion. Six of his paintings and an obelisk are now featured in the postmodern atrium, Hood said, all done on cowhide.

Revered for his abstraction and experimentation with different formats, Downing had created oil paintings on terra cotta roof tiles, linen bed sheets and rustic barn doors.

"He has a lot of original work, things that nobody else has ever done," said Baker, who met Downing in 1992.

Downing commonly did not date his works, and exhibits where hung with no regard to chronology -- reflecting his focus on places and states of being over time, according to one art critic.

"I have always thought that my work has been a daily dreaming of the dream that living has been," Downing once told a French critic.

Born in Tompkinsville, Downing grew up on a tobacco farm in Horse Cave. As a child, he explored the caves of the region, which he often cited as an influence on his style.

After graduating from Horse Cave High School, he served in the Army during World War II. Returning home, he enrolled at Western Kentucky University and studied art. A neighbor suggested Downing try optometry and offered to share a practice.

Downing earned his optometry degree in 1950 from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, where he met writers, artists and actors who inspired him to take classes at the Chicago Art Institute.

"Gradually, bit by bit, the painting devoured the optometry," Downing said, "and I knew I would never fit glasses."

His first major one-man show in America was in 1962, at the old Art Center in Louisville. By then, he'd already had 10 one-man shows in Europe.

Working as clerk at a law firm during his first decade or so in Paris, Downing invented the art form known as stapleage -- collages made from office supplies and assembled with staples.

Downing has works in the Louvre (Museum) in Paris, the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Seattle and Cincinnati Art museums and the Speed Art Museum, as well as numerous other museums in Europe. His art has also been exhibited in Canada and Mexico.

Downing's critical success has often been traced to 1952, when Pablo Picasso visited one of the earliest displays of Downing's work and pronounced it "Well done."

I was able to talk to Dudley in 2000 during his exhibition at the Kentucky Museum. We enjoyed sharing stories about odd surfaces that we had both painted on and how art found us. It was really great fun talking to him.

Last year, I was able to assist a family in selling several of Mr. Downings' works. This was a great honor. All of the works remain in collections in Kentucky.

Lastly, I was looking forward to the new museum and the exhibition in the spring with great anticipation. I am still in shock, but hopeful that all will go forward.

Art Education...why?

The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.
The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.
The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.
The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor number exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.
The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects.
The arts traffic in subtleties.
The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
When children are invited to disclose what a work of art means, it helps them feel they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
The arts enable us to have an experience we can't have from any other source.
Through such experiences we discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.
The position of art in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Interest in Public Art?

I am organizing a forum to discuss Public Art and its purpose in Kentucky and Tennessee. The forum will also include a discussion concerning the most efficient Request for Proposals (RFP) and Request for Qualifications (RFQ) requirements and formats. Please let me know of your interest in attending or participating in this upcoming forum.

"Public art is a mirror that reflects the local environment, cultural values, and artistic vitality of the community in which it exists. At its best, public art is more than just art installed in public places. It is a community-based process of dialogue, involvement, and participation. Public art enhances the quality of life for citizens by encouraging a heightened sense of place, enhancing a community's prestige, and enlivening the visual quality of the built environment. Successful public art is site-specific and responds to the concept of place-making."

-- Lake Douglas, former director at the Arts Council of New Orleans and now a public art consultant

During the 2007 Tomato Art Fest, Andee (with help from people in the community) created to a new mural behind the post office on Woodland Street in Nashville, TN. SCARECROWS!

September 29 - November 4
www.cheekwood.org

Get ready for some good old-fashioned fall fun at Cheekwood! Scarecrows will showcase dozens of fabulous, weird, funny, and traditional scarecrows lurking along the Garden paths.

For the Birds
Hungry birds have always been a problem for farmers. Birds, such as crows, sometimes ate so much corn or wheat that farmers did not have enough food to last through the winter. So, for more than 3,000 years, farmers have been making scarecrows. As long as birds are hungry, farmers will still look for ways to SCARECROWS!

While we know our straw-filled friends as scarecrows, the protective characters have many different names. In Britain, they are called mommets, tattie bogies and hodmedods. Other places around the world scarecrows are known as jack-of-straws, scarebirds, and shoy-hoys.

Scarecrow Stories
(or Stories of Scarecrow, which do you like better)
The scarecrow is one of the most familiar figures of the rural landscape not only in the United States but throughout the world. His ragged figure has been recorded in rural history for centuries. We think of scarecrows as human-like figures stuffed with straw, but farmers have invented many different "scarecrows" to protect their crops over the years.

The first scarecrows in recorded history were placed along the Nile River to protect wheat fields from flocks of quail. Egyptian farmers covered wooden frames with fishing nets. The farmers hid in the fields and scared the quail into the nets.

Japanese farmers also began making scarecrows to protect their rice fields. The farmers hung old rags, meat, and fish bones from bamboo poles in their fields and then set them on fire. The smell was so bad that birds, and all other living creatures, stayed far away from the crops. The Japanese farmers called their scarecrows kakashis, which literally means something that smells bad.

In Medieval Britain, their scarecrows weren't made from wood or bamboo, but were live boys and girls. Known as bird scarers or bird shooers, they patrolled wheat fields carrying bags of stones. If crows landed in the fields, they would chase them off by waving their arms and throwing the stones.

Fathom exhibition-Chattanooga, TN

Connect 12 opens Sept.1

Featured in the Nashville Scene's Critic's Picks:
CONNECT 12 This exhibit, curated by Ben Vitualla, features the diverse works of 12 of Nashville's longtime arts warriors. The goal of the exhibit is to educate the viewer about the history and continued growth of our local arts community. Painter Andee Rudloff has exhibited with Untitled Artists and Plowhaus Artists' Cooperative, in addition to being involved with the successful Arts in the Airport program. Her dreamy landscapes are meant to reflect a sense of memory. Untitled's husband-and-wife teams are also included in the September exhibit. Alesandra Bellos is "giving away her dreams" in a performance art piece at the opening reception. Her husband, Rick Bradley, is doing an interactive piece featuring monitors showing repeated imagery that explores the idea of machines expressing emotions. Eric Denton will exhibit his quirky photographs in the show alongside wife Tiffany Denton's fiber collages. Audience participation is encouraged in three installations and one performance art piece. With the majority of Art at the Arcade spaces having stellar shows opening this month and the McKay Otto/Monica Cook show at TAG, downtown is the place to be this Saturday night. Opening reception 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 1 at Dangenart Gallery; runs through Sept. 28.

Beshear/Mongiardo on your barn?

This is an exciting time for Kentucky, as we finally have a candidate for Governor that has IDEAS and a vision for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Steve Beshear is from Kentucky and remembers when Kentucky was a vacation destination for millions each year. Beshear wants to take Kentucky back to a place to live and visit...by TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN.
I so strongly believe in this candidate, that I am ready to paint the logo above on any barn facing a highway, byway or interstate across Kentucky.
Please email me and let me know where your barn is...and I will schedule a time to come and paint it. With many barns already lined up, I recommend you contact me ASAP. No barns will be painted after November 1st.

Thank you and do what you can to support Beshear/Mongiardo!!!
